3 Tips For Communicating With Your Loved Ones During An Emergency

While no one wants to think about themselves or their loved ones being in some kind of an emergency, if you want to know what to do if and when an emergency does take place, it’s going to be helpful to have some kind of plan in place or at least thought through so that you know what steps you’d ideally take. This can be especially useful when communicating with your loved ones during a time of emergency, as communication can often be spotty during these kinds of events.

To help you in figuring all of this out, here are three tips for communicating with your loved ones during an emergency.

Memorize Certain Phone Numbers

Along with knowing the phone numbers for how to contact help like the police and other public services, you’ll also want to know who specifically you’ll want to contact during an emergency.

In many cases, you won’t be able to rely on just clicking on their name and number in your phone. If you don’t have your phone with you or your phone loses its battery, you’ll need to know how to contact your loved ones by calling them from another phone. This will require you either having their phone numbers memorized or written down somewhere that you can easily get to and look up in addition to being on your phone.

Try Texting First

If you do have access to a cell phone and can send a text message to another cell phone number, texting might be the best option for communication during an emergency.

When there’s an emergency that’s being experienced by a whole area, all of the people in that area will likely be trying to call their loved ones to see if everyone is okay. But when this happens, the capacity of the providers can quickly become overwhelmed. However, text messages don’t require the bandwidth that phone calls do, which means you have a greater likelihood of having your text go through than your phone call if voice networks are busy.

Communicate Via Social Networks

In addition to using your phone to contact your loved ones, you can also use other social networks to get in contact and check in with each other. And because these networks use data that isn’t always that same as making a phone call or a text message, you might have more luck being able to access these apps and get a message out.

Along with this, you can also use your social media accounts to mark that you’re safe from some kind of event or emergency that’s happened in your area. This way, you can just make one update that your entire network can see rather than having to individually reach out to different people.

If you want to know how to best communicate with your loved ones when you’re in an emergency, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you in doing this.
